CLARION, Pennsylvania: Perhaps you’ve heard their distinctive “peent” call as they wobble through the evening air above your neighborhood, or the boom of their feathers when they dive. Perhaps you didn’t know that in mid-August, Common Nighthawks form large flocks to begin their fall migration to southern South America, over one of the longest migration routes of any North American bird. You can witness this migration with the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society!
The Society has begun its Nighthawk Watch program, taking place nightly through early September. There are two locations, both oriented to a waterway. Join Gary Edwards at the Oil City Marina, or Mal Hays and Larry Towse at the Mill Creek Boat Launch. Both groups begin counting migratory Nighthawks at 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. The birds you see may have already flown from Canada! By assisting the team with their counting, you are participating in citizen science, while making friends and observing a pattern that has taken place over millennia. No special skills are needed! We hope to see you there.
