Seneca Rocks Audobon Society Needs Your Help

Data Collectiion Needed

CLARION, Pennsylvania: Looking for a different way to observe the Christmas holiday? How about something that gets you outside, and helps birds? The Audubon Christmas Bird Count started in 1900 as a way to gather information about birds instead of hunting them. In 1988, the Seneca Rocks Audubon Society— the local chapter of the Audubon Society— brought the effort to the Clarion area and has continued the tradition ever since.

You can join us in this nationwide effort, counting birds in the Clarion Count Circle (covering Clarion, Sligo, Shippenville, Strattanville, Knox, Callensburg and the countryside in between) via carpool, or at your feeder, throughout the day on December 14. The data collected helps the Audubon Society and other conservation organizations assess the status of bird populations. You must sign up with us in advance. To participate in a carpool team, contact Mal Hays at 814-764-5645 or by email at malhays54@ mail.com. To count birds at a feeder, send an email to senecarocksaudubon@gmail.com. Our Feeder Watch Coordinator, Cindy Bonner, will contact you. Advanced bird identification skills are not required and you can spend as little or as much time as you want.

Participants in the count will meet on December 18 at 2:00 pm at Perkin’s Restaurant in Clarion to report on team tallies. This event is optional but always a lot of fun.
