Rimersburg Blood Drive Aims For Union Student Scholarship

Springing into Action This Season : A representative of the Rimersburg Lions Club and National Honor Society students of Union High School recently met to plan for the upcoming May 6, 2025 American Red Cross Blood Drive set for the auxiliary gym of Union High School from noon to 5:00 p.m. Shown here (L-R) front row-Cassidy McCullough, Danikah McKinney, Brailagh Claypoole, and Brianna Anthony; back row-Rimersburg Lions Club Blood Drive Leader Greg Mortimer, Gage Jordan, Owen Terwent, Donovan Buzard, and Lynnsica Zitzman.

An additional incentive has been added to the American Red Cross blood drive set for Tuesday, May 6, 2025 in the auxiliary gym of Union High School located at 354 Baker Street in Rimersburg. The blood drive, to be held from noon to 5:00 p.m., is being sponsored for the third year by the Rimersburg Lions Club with the community service organization being assisted at the school by Union High School students of the National Honor Society.

Individuals can easily schedule an appointment to give blood at the school on May 6th by calling the American Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767 or by visiting www.redcrossblood.org with sponsor code “lionsclub” or “16248”. The American Red Cross strongly recommends scheduling an appointment to give blood to help them determine the amount of professional staffing needed for the drive, as well as, to promote the efficient flow of donors during the afternoon drive.

The American Red Cross now promotes a student scholarship program available to high schools that host at least one Red Cross blood drive a year. The amount of the scholarship is based on the number of successful blood donations secured at the school blood drive which can range from $250.00 to $3000.00. The minimum donations required for a college-bound senior to receive a scholarship is at least 30 successful blood donations at a school blood drive.

Last year a Union High School senior was awarded a $250.00 college scholarship upon the successful donation of over 30 blood donors at the Union High School blood drive.

Representatives from the school will determine the scholarship recipient based on Red Cross recommended criteria. Scholarship recipients will also be encouraged to continue supporting the Red Cross by helping to host a blood drive while in college.

“So we’re asking area residents to ‘Spring into Action’ on May 6th and ‘Give the Gift of Life’ by giving blood and at the same time help a Union High School senior receive a generous scholarship from the American Red Cross to further their higher education,” Rimersburg Lions Club Blood Drive Leader Greg Mortimer stated.

In additional to Mortimer, other Lions Club members and associates assisting with the blood drive include Roger and Susie Crick, Mike and Margaret Graham, Sydney Varner Hile, Alan Carmichael, and Rich Barger. Union High School teacher Anthony Beveridge is also assisting the effort as liaison teacher with students of the National Honor Society.
