On Sunny Lane: There is a Season

I made a strawberry glaze pie last week.

I made it with fresh strawberries I had bought at one of the local Amish stands. A whole pie was too much for Sweetheart and me to eat, so I invited some friends over to share it.

But it was so good that I made another one and invited some other friends over to share it. And, since the Amish stands no longer had strawberries for sale, I bought blueberries from another Amish stand and mixed them with the remaining strawberries I had. That pie was good, too. Besides, once we sprayed the whipped cream on it, the pie was red, white and blue.

I like to get fruit when it is in season, when it is fresh and locally grown. I think it has a hearty flavor when it is newly picked. Once a new fruit starts to produce, I am tired of the kind that is waning.

Each fruit and vegetable has its season. I know I could buy strawberries or blueberries or any fruit or vegetable I want at the local supermarkets and I have no quarrel with people who do. I just like to honor the seasons of nature.

Of course, each time one crop fades, another one bears fruit and so it is with the weather that makes it all happen. And so it is with people, as well. We are babes in arms, slowly growing into childhood, adolescence, adulthood and then senior life.

So it is with nations and civilizations. Humans have grown and learned and advanced in technology. They have learned how to do everything bigger and better (and some not so good). In all nations there have been wars and chaos and times of relative peace. Some civilizations have been decimated and annihilated, left to twist in the wind, for known or unknown reasons. And then others come along and the same space is rebuilt and repopulated.

Even the globe we live on has gone through growing pains. There have been ice ages and times of warmth. There have been upheavals of earth and sea and sky and they continue even as I write.

Perhaps, there is a season for everything, as the wisdom writer in scripture said and, maybe, we are living through several seasons at once. Whatever the season, we must make the best of it and, hopefully, make the best of it for others.
