I just got done talking with a friend on the telephone.
She was telling me that this year was not a good one for her. She had health issues that kept her in and out of the hospital for tests and treatments. The same held true for one of her friends. Sweetheart and I also had major and minor health issues.
My friend said she is hoping the next year will be better. Realistically speaking, at our age we can’t very well expect our health to get much better. It’s probably too much to expect to feel like we did 40-50 years ago. We can be happy if our health levels off.
However, 2024 wasn’t a complete write-off. In spite of health issues, we were all able to go to the Sunday jubilee, Monday night dances and the holiday dinners at the senior center. We celebrated our birthdays, had reunions and went on some trips—long ones and short ones.
When looking ahead toward a better year, it’s easy to get bogged down in the past. However, dwelling on the past can put a stumbling block on the path to the future.
I sometimes go to a church where they have a “burning bowl” on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day. We are asked to write down something we would like to let go of and put it in the bowl, where it is consumed by fire.
It probably doesn’t matter what we write down. It could be a bad habit, a regret or a worry—or all three. The fire symbolizes letting go of whatever may be holding us back from being the best we can be.
When we decide to let go, maybe we should let God take over. He can take us on the right path.
