Larry J. Curtis, 75, of Chicora, went to be with the Lord early Sunday evening, September 15, 2024, while in the company of his loving family at the Chicora Medical Center following a courageous four year battle with cancer.
Larry was born in Butler on September 3, 1949. He was the son of the late Lawrence J. and Eileen Young Curtis.
He was a 1967 graduate of Karns City Area High School and had been employed as a boiler operator at Penreco in Karns City for 42 years. Larry was a member of the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers Union. He also had been employed by Toby Fennell Contracting in Chicora. Larry was a skilled carpenter who built four of his own homes and was always willing to help others with their building projects. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed being at his camp in Sheffield. While at camp, he and his wife attended the Kane Community Methodist Church. Larry had been an active member of St. Paul’s Community Church in Sugarcreek Twp. and participated in building projects on mission trips to Guatemala. He served on the Oak Grove Cemetery Board for many years and was a knowledgeable and respected cemetery sexton. Larry had most recently attended The First United Methodist Church and Crossfire in Butler. Larry’s greatest joys in life were the company of his family, especially his kids and grandkids.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon Craig Curtis, whom he married at St. Paul’s Church on September 17, 1983. Also surviving are five children, Steven Curtis and his wife, Ginneen, of Midland, Amy Bowser and her husband, Greg, of Punta Gorda, FL, Larry P. Curtis of Butler, Jason Curtis and his wife, Carrie, and Lindsey Snow and her husband, Josh, of Chicora; seven grandchildren, Bowen, Dalton, Zoe, and Payton Bly, Ryker, Myla, and Kane Snow; two step grandchildren, Rylee and Alyna LaVelle; five great grandchildren, Annabelle, Arianna, Coty, Jackson, and Addison Bly; two sisters, Kathy Franko and her husband, Mike, of Butler and Margie Slater and her husband, Gary, of Chicora; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bernie and Shirl Craig of Ford City, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, father-in-law and a brother-in-law.
Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Karns City, 128 Main St., Karns City, from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church, 200 East North Street, Butler with Rev. David Janz, senior church pastor and Rev. Calvin Cook, of the Kane Community United Methodist Church, co-officiating. Interment will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Sugarcreek Twp. A going home service will be held at the Kane United Methodist Church on October 5.
