Joan Edna Whited

January 19, 1929 - October 15, 2024

Joan Edna Whited passed peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of October 15th. She was born January 19th, 1929 in Clarion County, Pa. to Ward and Edna (Hartman) Stewart.

She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Joan was preceded in death by her parents, sister Helen Corrine Heckler, and husband of 67 years, George Whited.

Joan is survived by her sister Rosalyn Orr, sons Greg (Kathy), Dave (Linda), and Dan; grandchildren Kevin, Michelle (John Dranschak), Matthew (Meg), Kirby Burt, T (Kyle Boggs), Jacob, Eric, Alex; great-grandchildren Seth, Brayden, Eli, Keaton, Kayla, and Lorraine.

George and Joan were married on August 30th, 1953 in their hometown of Rimersburg, Pa. Together, they raised their three sons in Columbus, Ohio.

Joan was a strong and spirited woman, devoted wife, and matriarch, but her favorite title of all was “Great Grandma.” She treasured her family and bragged about them to everyone! She especially loved being around babies and young children and was famous for planting a kiss on the bare bottom of each of her grandchildren as infants.

She enjoyed traveling and reading, but most of all, any time spent with her husband, George. He was an avid woodworker, and Joan learned to turn beautiful wood pens on his lathe (perhaps just as an excuse to be near him).

In the last few years of her life, Joan exchanged handwritten letters, cards, and family photos with her childhood friend, Lilian, whose treasured friendship brought Joan endless joy.

Joan & George’s legacy will live on through their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom they cherished most dearly. The Whited family is grateful to the staff and caregivers at StoryPoint Gahanna for the loving care they provided over the last few years of her life.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October 21, 2024, from 4 - 7 PM at Schoedinger Funeral Home, 5360 East Livingston Ave. Columbus, OH 43232. A Funeral service will be held at 10 AM Tuesday, October 22, 2024, followed by a graveside service, at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 5600 E Broad St.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Schoedinger Funeral & Cremation Service | Dignity Memorial - East. You can share a memory online at Dignity Memorial.
