Hazel Louise “Myrt” Craig


Hazel Louise “Myrt” Craig, 93, a lifelong Chicora resident, went to be with the Lord early Friday morning, May 3, 2024 in Chicora.

Hazel was born in Chicora on June 9, 1930.  She was the daughter of the late Hazel M. Houten Burns.

She was a graduate of Chicora High School and had been employed for a number of years by the P.L.C.B. at the State Store in Butler.

Myrt enjoyed crocheting, sewing, painting, playing cards, bingo, traveling, and attending the Chicora Senior Center.  She was a longtime active member of the Chicora United Methodist Church and the Methodist Women of the church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor L. “Jim” Craig Jr., on April 8, 1996. The couple was married in Chicora on August 19, 1950.

Surviving are four children, Dean L. Craig and his wife, Helen, of Butler, Lynn R. Graham and her husband, Ronald, of Chicora, Lisa R. Fair and her husband, Wayne Jr., of Parker, and Drew L. Craig and his wife, Kelley, of Connellsville; her grandchildren, Lauren Weddell and her husband, Eric, of Gibsonia, Allison Turgeon and her husband, Jeff, of Irwin, Jessica Tan and her husband, Dr. Henkie Tan of Collier Twp., Brooke Fair Switzer of Parker, Levi Fair of Monroeville, Zachary Craig and his wife, April, of Uniontown, Jacob Craig and his wife, Kensey, of Flatwoods, and Victoria Miner and her husband, Nathan, of Connellsville; nine great grandchildren, Tyler and Owen Turgeon, Henry Tan, Lillian and Darrin Weddell, Wyatt, Addisyn, Eliza, and Bennett Craig; four sisters, Susan Miller of Chicora, Geraldine Foley of Butler, Shirley Callihan of Chicora, Donna Callihan and her husband, John, of Chicora; a brother-in-law, Richard “Dick” Craig of Chicora, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her mother and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Phyllis Burns, Margaret Ace, and Betty Gabel, a brother, Peter Burns, and a number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd., Chicora, from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 5, 2025. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2024, from the funeral home with Rev. Amy Worline, Quality Life Services Chaplain, officiating. Interment will be in Hemphill Cemetery, Chicora.
