Donna J. Surrena



Donna J. Surrena, 86, of Chicora, went to be with the Lord and her loving husband early Monday morning, October 7, 2024, at the Chicora Medical Center.

Donna was born in Karns City on July 6, 1938. She was the daughter of the late Ernest P. and Florence Claypoole Umstead.

She was a graduate of East Brady High School and in her earlier years, she was employed at Murphy’s in Butler. She was a long-time active member of the Karns City United Methodist Church. Donna was a dedicated and loving homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and baking, especially fresh bread and cookies. She also looked forward to Saturday family dinners at her home. Christmas was her favorite holiday and Donna made a variety of Christmas candies and hardtack. She solved many word search puzzles and in her earlier years, she and her husband enjoyed camping. Donna always looked forward to telephone conversations with her mother whom she spoke with her every evening.

Donna was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel O. Surrena, whom she married at the former Mt. Pleasant Lutheran Church on February 10, 1962. Mr. Surrena preceded her in death on September 3, 2022.

Surviving are three children, Debbie L. Steele and her husband, Rick, Denise M. Young and her husband, Walter, and David W. Surrena and his wife, Sue, all of Chicora; eight grandchildren, R. Bruce Steele and his wife, Jessica, Serina Steele-Haller, Rebecca Ostrzeniec and her husband, Mark, Joshua Young and his wife, Jessica, Heather West and her husband, Patrick, Sarah Roudebush and her husband, Kyle, Megan Wiley and her husband, Jon, and Dillan Surrena and his girlfriend, Autumn; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Janet Slater and Alice Hetrick and her husband, Charles, all of Chicora, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and their husbands, R. Aileene and Jack Hetrick and Mary Belle and Charles Ace, and a brother-in-law, Robert Slater.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home of Chicora, 339 Chicora Fenelton Rd., Chicora, from Noon to 2 and 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, October 9, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 10, 2024, from the funeral home with the Rev. Beverly Roscoe, her church pastor, officiating. The interment will be at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
