The weather was beautiful on Saturday, August 24th for the 12th Annual Brion Schiberl Memorial Golf Outing which was held at Stoney Meadow Golf Course. A benefit which included a Chinese auction and steak dinner was also held at Otto’s Tavern in Emlenton in conjunction with the golf outing; all of which benefited Jerry Marzik. Jerry, a resident of Emlenton, was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer in the spring of 2013.

The sound of a motor boat roaring up the river is the sound that you hear as you pass by the Emlenton I-80 Bridge, however, it’s not a motor boat but the sound of a high powered blaster.

Underneath the cocoon looking wrapper, bridge contractor, North Star Inc., has set up containment for steel blasting (removal of existing paint) and painting of the primer. They have begun blasting last week and are expected to continue for the next couple months.

U.S. Economic Development Administration Invests $297,925 to Build Critical Infrastructure and Create Jobs in Brookville, Pennsylvania

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) today announced a $297,925 grant to Jefferson County and the Brookville Municipal Authority in Brookville, Pennsylvania, to help build critical water and sewer infrastructure for the city’s new Jefferson County Business Park. The project is expected to create 100 jobs and generate $10 million in private investment, according to grantee estimates.

There is agreement that in recent past decades the loss of jobs and population decline has left the upper Allegheny River Valley struggling to maintain economic health and growth. The oil wealth is history and the promise of natural gas development is still merely a promise for Venango and Clarion counties. Throughout the area there are various business, government and civic groups including Economic Development Corporations, Chambers of Commerce and non-profit entities working diligently to collaborate and aid in the revitalization of the region.

Scrubgrass Grange has received the following update on the Emlenton Hill Improvement Project from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Mekis Construction Corporation, the low bidder for the project, is currently on time with the completion schedule. Total construction cost for the project is $17,156,493.69.

First Compressed Natural Gas Station in Area Celebrates Grand Opening

Palo CNG station celebrated their grand opening of the first CNG station in Clarion County (Compressed Natural Gas) off I-80 Exit 64. Mike Palo, owner described the process of setting up and running an alternative/multi-fuel station. The event on July 19th gave tours and demonstrations of the facility.

Phillipston Turntable Armstrong Trail Historic Site

The train turntable located just outside of Phillispton and along the Armstrong Trail is getting a much needed makeover. Site work began in the fall of 2011 when Armstrong Rails to Trails Association (ARTA) members Angie and Darwin Burtner began clearing the area around the turntable. The vegetation had hidden this old railroad gem for decades. Two years later the work continues.

The 2013 Emlenton Summer Festival once again set the stage for weekend entertainment July 12, 13, 14th. Nestled along the hills of Allegheny River, the quiet rivertown welcomed all as it showcased a spectacular fireworks show on Saturday, July 13th.
