Open Letter from the

in

I have been assistant fire chief for the Emlenton Fire Department for 40 years and president of the Emlenton Borough Council nearly 20 years.
On the evening of February 5, 2015, shortly after 10PM, the Emlenton Fire Department was dispatched to heavy smoke coming from the Mill on Main St. called in by the Emlenton Police Dept.

It was 8 degrees below zero when I left my home and 11 degrees below on our other assistant chief’s vehicle. Our fire department works with Parker, St. Petersburg, Knox, Eau Claire, Clintonville, Rockland, and Seneca on a regular basis, all very good fire departments. However, with the river being frozen over, we needed all the tanker trucks to haul water that we could get. Help from Venango County 911, Clarion County 911 and Butler County 911 dispatching several of their fire departments and a few from Armstrong and Mercer Counties made the difference from losing the Mill and one other business to losing the Mill and 4 or 5 other nearby homes. Thank you to all.
Also, I would like to acknowledge the news coverage. The TV stations, KDKA, WPXI, WTAE; the newspapers, The Progress News, The Derrick, The Clarion News, The Butler Eagle, The Post-Gazette, The Tribune Review; they all serve as an important outlet that reminds the public what a few fine people do to keep the community safe.
And last but not least, to the Red Cross, Emlenton Businesses, and local residents who came out that night to offer assistance and support. Everything was greatly appreciated, from the pizzas, soup, doughnuts, and sandwiches that filled the firehouse, to the coffee, hot chocolate, Gatorade, and water. Many, many thanks. To the Emlenton Ambulance Service, the Emlenton P.D., the Borough Street Department, PennDOT, and Hovis Trucking, we appreciate all you did.
In closing, to all the responding fire departments from Marienville in Forest County to Penn Township in Butler County, drop us a line and let us know if you were involved in helping at this fire. We would like to send a thank you out to everyone, whether you were at a fill site, trucking water, or covering another station, please let us know at Emlenton Borough, PO Box 537, Emlenton, PA 16373 or Emlentonborough@embarqmail.com.
The next time anyone sees a member of a local fire department, I hope they thank them for all they have done. Many have no idea what good people they have protecting them.

Barry Louise, President
Emlenton Borough Council
Emlenton, PA 16373.
