Keystone SMILES Service Signature Project - MLK Day

A day on, not a day off for SMILES members and volunteers on MLK Day.

Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps MLK Day of Service Signature Project took place, January 17, 18, and 20, 2014. Over this three day period, a total of 61 AmeriCorps members from our 12 county service region joined 18 staff and 7 community volunteers in Clarion, PA for SMILES MLK Service Project. The overall service hour total for the three days was 1,014.

The MLK Project took place at a newly created non-profit called "Winds of Trade" located in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The goal of this organization is to assist individuals in gaining valuable skills in different trades including carpentry, culinary arts, crafts etc. in order to make them more employable. During this MLK Project, Keystone SMILES AmeriCorps members, staff, and community volunteers provided meaningful services to the new agency including laying a laminate floor, building and installing work stations for future carpentry projects, building and painting bird houses, and making mats, hats and scarves to donate back to the community.

The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community. Keystone SMILES, (Service Making an Impact through Learning Experiences with Students), for almost 20 years has focused on strengthening its own and neighboring rural communities through its mission: to empower and strengthen people of all ages with a focus on children and youth to enhance the quality of their lives through learning and service.
