Florence R. Crisman Passes Away at Age 99

Florence R. Crisman, age 99, of Knox, passed away Friday morning, April 10, 2015, at the Redstone Highlands in Greensburg.
Born January 13, 1916 in Blair County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel M. and Ora Crisman and graduated from Clearfield Area High School.
She worked as a substitute mail carrier during the summers of her early college years, received a B.S. Degree in Education from Indiana State College (IUP) in May of 1938 and began teaching business education at the White Memorial School in Knox in September 1938.
While teaching fulltime, Miss Crisman attended the University of Pittsburgh. There she earned a Masters in Letters and Business Administration Degree with a Major in Accounting in January of 1953.
Miss Crisman initiated the district’s “Senior Trip to Washington D.C., with the first trip being taken by car pool in the fall of 1949.
After 40 years of teaching at Keystone, she retired on June 14, 1978.
She is a life member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and is a member of the National Retired Teachers Association, Pennsylvania State and National Education Associations the Alpha Theta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Miss Crisman was a member of the Edenburg Presbyterian Church and at one time very active in the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Knox and Women’s Association, serving as an officer, church treasurer as well as composing the weekly bulletins. She also was a member of the local civic organizations for many years.
She was selected as “Citizen of the Year” in 1999 during the annual Horsethief Celebration in Knox.
Miss Crisman is survived by a niece, Catherine Spinazolla and her husband, Dan, of Altoona and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Crisman and four nieces.
Family and friends will be received from 1-3 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 12, 2015 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 13, 2015 in the funeral home with the Reverends Gary Hilfiger and Jay Montgomery officiating.
