“Drake Well Museum Presents Something More Saturdays”

Beginning in January 2015, Drake Well Museum and the Friends of Drake Well, Inc. will present Something More Saturdays, a monthly program offering visitors unique and entertaining learning experiences not included in a typical visit to the museum. Scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the second Saturday of every month, Something More Saturday programs are included in the museum’s regular admission fees. Families will be able to take advantage of the program’s Special Family Admission Rate, up to 2 adults and 3 children for only $20.00.

According to Museum Site Administrator Melissa Mann, the goal of the Something More Saturdays program is to provide visitors with a meaningful and memorable experience. “We hope that the special hands-on activities and demonstrations presented during Something More Saturdays will help our visitors form a deeper appreciation for the industrial, social and natural history of Pennsylvania’s Oil Region,” said Mann.

On January 10, Drake Well Museum will kick-off Something More Saturdays with a program themed on storytelling. At 1:00 p.m., acclaimed storyteller Bill Stumpf will captivate visitors of all ages with the hilarious oil field tales of Gib Morgan. Billed as the “Minstrel of the Oil Fields,” Gib Morgan traveled throughout the Allegheny and Ohio valleys working as a driller, tool dresser, and a notorious storyteller. His tall tales are filled with chronicles of his adventures in and out of the oil industry, both real and imaginary, incorporating people and animals invented to suit his purpose. Come, listen, and laugh as Mr. Stumpf recreates the dry, subtle humor of these outlandish tales which became Gib Morgan’s trademark. Visitors to January’s Something More Saturday will also enjoy trying their hands at crafting their own stories based on historic images from the museum’s archive.

Located off Route 8 south of Titusville, Drake Well Museum and Park is open year round. Winter hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5:00 p.m. Drake Well Museum and Park is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission in partnership with Friends of Drake Well, Inc. and is part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History® (www.PATrailsofHistory.com).
