Double Drivel 5/6/14

Mike’s Commentary: Farmers National Bank Field, home of A-C Valley Little League, recently underwent a major infield renovation. The improvements were possible in large part due to a grant received through the Pittsburgh Pirates. With local teams ready to embark on a new season, don’t forget to get out and support the area youngsters.
—Wouldn’t you think it would be wise for an owner of an NBA team, who employs African-Americans for his squad that help him to make his millions, to steer clear of making racial comments? Apparently Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling didn’t think it necessary and, thus, his punishment will be a lifetime ban from the NBA and a $2.5 million fine.
Dick’s  Thoughts
The old saying is you can’t win the pennant in April but you can lose it is not a good sign for the Pirates.  As of this writing the Bucs are 10-18 and 9.5 games out of first place.  I predicted 87-75 this season, 75-87 might be optimistic at this point.
The Pirates starting lineup in Game 2 of their recent doubleheader did not have 1 hitter batting over 300.  Remember when they were the Lumber Company and would put 7 hitters in the lineup hitting 300 or better.
Pirate shortstops Jordi Mercer and Clint Barmes are hitting a combined 152 with 0 home runs and 4 runs batted in.
The Bucs are paying Wandy Rodriguez $13 million this year.  He has been bad in the majors and in his last appearance at Altoona he might have been worse against AA hitters.
Hard to believe but when the Steelers head to St Vincents the only starter on defense that has been a Pro Bowler will be Troy Polamalu.
The NFL draft is this week and look for the Steelers to take one of these cornerbacks in the first round.  Ike Taylor is not getting any younger so look for the Black & Gold to take either Justin Gilbert, Darqueze Dennard, or Kyle Fuller.
The NBA motto used to be it was FANtastic.  If you have watched the playoffs this year they have surpassed fantastic.
Thought of the week:  We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.
