Congratulations to the Karns City girls basketball team for capturing the District 9 AA basketball championship.  Also congratulations for the Keystone girls team for being the District 9 A runners up.

Dicks Thoughts:
Ben McAdoo was recently named the new Offensive Coordinator of the New York Giants.  McAdoo  played his high school football at Homer Center where he was coached by former AC Valley standout Rick Foust.  Look for Rick on the sidelines of Giants games.

Zach Davis has led the Van Alstyne (TX) high school basketball team to a 22-3 record.  Davis leads the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. Zach is the son of former Emlenton resident Scott Davis and the grandson of Daryl (Red) and Joan Davis of Emlenton.
Head Coach Emily Marron has her University of Central Florida women’s golf team up to #21 in the latest rankings. The Knights in their last 6 tournaments have finished no worse than 5th and have won the last 2.

Dick’s Thoughts -
Keystone’s Kennedy McClendon has committed to continue her athletic (soccer) and academic (early childhood/special education) careers at Westminster College.
The Steelers are 33 to 1 to win next year’s Super Bowl.

Mike’s Commentary: Duke visited Peterson Events Center to take on Pitt last week in a good test to see where Pitt stacks up with the ACC elite. While the game was tight well into the 2nd half, Duke pulled away for a 15 point victory. Duke shot lights out from the 3-point line and Pitt’s normal staunch defense could not stop them. What I did see as Pitt transforms from the old rugged, physical style of the Big East, was a much more up-tempo Pitt offense. This will serve them well in the future.

Dick’s Thoughts
For the first time ever PNC Park wil host an ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game this season. The May 11th game versus the Cardinals will be shown.
Baseball America has named the Pirates as having the number 1 farm system in baseball.
The 2 best things to happen to the Pirates this off season is Carlos Beltran is no longer a St Louis Cardinal and Shin Soo Choo is no longer a Cincinnati Red.

Dick’s Thoughts
Pitt won the Pizza Bowl 30-27 over Bowling Green. The win gave Pitt their first winning season since Dave Wannstedt was the coach. Beating the MAC champion is not a big deal, but beating them with the number of freshmen that Pitt used is. Pitt has sunk to a level where they were actually 7 point underdogs in the game. But again the future looks bright for Pitt when you consider that all 30 points were scored by freshmen.

Dick’s Thoughts
The Pirates at this time have a huge question mark at first base with 3 months till the opener.  Right now it looks like a platoon between Gabby Sanchez and Andrew Lambo….YIKES.  Lambo is currently learning the position in winter ball.  So desparate are the Bucs they just signed first baseman Travis Ishikawa who hit 105 with 1 rbi for the Yankees and Orioles last year.

Dick’s Thoughts:
Pitt’s Aaron Donald won the Bednarkik, Nagurski, Outland, and Lombardi Trophies, a clean sweep for a defensive lineman and yet was not invited to the Heisman Award ceremony. If a player sweeps every major award and can’t make the Top 6 for the NY Athletic Club, a defensive player will never win the Heisman. I just remembered the great Manti Te’o finished as the Heisman runner up last year.

Mike’s Commentary:  While there may not be many things in sports as certain as having snow during the winter in Pennsylvania, there is one sure bet in NASCAR.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won his 11th consecutive most popular driver award. And while Junior naysayers will say that is the only thing he can win, Dale put up solid numbers this year, finishing 5th in the season ending standings, and scoring more points than any other driver over the 2nd half of the Chase.
